Calls Grow for Increased Youth Participation in Nigerian Government

Stakeholders have intensified calls for increased youth participation in governance, emphasizing the need for young leaders in key government positions to drive innovation and sustainable development.

With over 60% of Nigeria’s population under the age of 25, advocates argue that youth inclusion in leadership is crucial for addressing pressing issues such as unemployment, education reform, and technological advancement. Experts believe that young leaders bring fresh perspectives, bridge the generational gap in politics, and ensure policies reflect the aspirations of Nigeria’s youth.

Prominent young leaders currently serving in government include Hon. Ayodele Olawande, Minister for Youth Development, who has spearheaded initiatives on skill acquisition and entrepreneurship, and Hon. Bunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, known for implementing youth-centric security and immigration reforms. Others making significant impacts include Hon. Khadijah Kareem Omotayo, Personal Assistant to the President on Constituency Affairs, and Mr. Kareem Muri-Okunola, Principal Secretary to the President.

Beyond government, youth advocates are pointing to business leaders like Seyi Tinubu, CEO of Loatsad Promomedia, Kolawole Aspire, Chairman of Real Estate Developers of Nigeria (REDAN), and Oluwatobi Ajayi FICA, CEO/Chairman of Nord Automobiles Limited, as examples of young Nigerians capable of transforming industries and contributing to public sector leadership.

Proponents argue that expanding youth representation in government will enhance policy formulation and drive national progress. They urge authorities to create more opportunities for young professionals in governance, emphasizing that their involvement is not only beneficial but essential for Nigeria’s future.
